Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 21:47:43 GMT

“ Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ” led a crowd of new releases at the box office on the weekend before Christmas Monday. The DC and Warner Bros. superhero sequel starring Jason Momoa earned an estimated $28.1 million in its first three days of release in 3,706 locations in North America, according to studio estimates Sunday. By Monday it is projected to have around $40 million in domestic ticket sales.Despite many new offerings — including the family friendly animated film “ Migration,” the R-rated romantic comedy “Anyone But You,” the wrestling tragedy “ The Iron Claw ” and a ghostly tearjerker in “ All of Us Strangers ” — this will go down as a quieter pre-holiday frame at the box office. Moviegoing audiences perhaps just had other priorities than going to the cinema. It is never great for Hollywood or theaters when Christmas Eve falls on a prime weekend day, but the last time Christmas was on a Monday, in 2017, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” dominated the four-day charts with $71.5 mil...

(NEXSTAR) – You’ve got the sore throat, runny nose and cough (or any of the other common COVID-19 symptoms right now), but when you swab your nose and take a test, it comes out negative. Is there a chance you still have COVID-19? Could it be something else? The answer – to both questions – is yes.“If you are feeling symptomatic and you test negative for COVID-19, usually the most likely reason is you’re infected with something else besides COVID-19,” said Dr. Andrew Pekosz, a virologist and professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, during a media briefing. 5 things to know about the new COVID variant of interest, JN.1 After all, two other respiratory viruses, influenza and RSV, are starting to circulate at high levels in many states, and all three illnesses have overlapping symptoms. But Pekosz went on to say that a negative test doesn’t really change much as far as next steps go.“If you’re feeling sick, there really should be no dif...

Running back Darius Taylor on returning to the Gophers: ‘I love it here’

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 21:47:43 GMT

DETROIT — Darius Taylor says angst about his future with the Gophers football program was much ado about nothing. After the true freshman tailback led the Big Ten in rushing yards through September, fears set in that Taylor might exit via the NCAA transfer portal, taking a possible bigger package of name, image and likeness (NIL) compensation from another school. That concern emanated from head coach P.J. Fleck down to random aliases posting on message boards. The precedent of Mar’Keise “Bucky” Irving leaving the U for Oregon after his true freshman year in 2021 made the experience visceral.A public exhale came when Taylor posted on social media on Dec. 2 that he would return to the U for his sophomore season in 2024. He mentioned Dinkytown Athletes, the Gophers’ NIL collective, in his post.“There wasn’t really a process,” Taylor told the Pioneer Press on Saturday. “I just love it here. Great experience. I haven’t had anything bad or negative in any way. ...

Trudy Rubin: Ways to help victims of war this holiday season

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 21:47:43 GMT

This holiday season is a bleak time for Ukrainian civilians facing another winter of brutal Russian bombing — especially when GOP members of Congress have sent Vladimir Putin a huge Christmas gift by blocking further U.S. aid to Kyiv.It is also a tragic time for Israeli civilians traumatized by Hamas’ vicious attack, and for Palestinian civilians in Gaza suffering horribly from Israel’s military response. For those who are frustrated by a sense of helplessness and wondering how to help, one way is to donate to charities that are reaching civilians on the ground. In Ukraine, as soldiers battle on the front, civilian volunteer groups have held the country together. From the start of the war, women and men excused from the front lines have banded together to feed people in urban bomb shelters, rescue elderly Ukrainians from villages under fire, provide generators for those without heat and electricity, and help the internally displaced and wounded. The courage of ordinar...

Tesla Cybertruck: Elon Musk’s Alter Ego?

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 21:47:43 GMT

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, doesn’t do subtle. He makes spaceships that explode and underground vehicle transportation tunnels to nowhere. For the past 16 years, his company has also manufactured the only electric cars to successfully infiltrate the internal combustion engine automotive industry. After several marketing promises gone awry, Musk has also introduced the Cybertruck, the massive utilitarian pickup unveiled as a concept four years ago. It’s a futuristic contraption of extremes in design, construction and relevance. It’s the first stainless steel vehicle since the DeLorean featured in the 1985 movie “Back to the Future.”Tesla enthusiasts have praised the Cybertruck as revolutionary. Detractors claim it’s reminiscent of poorly made metal origami wedges. With public sightings infrequent and head-turning, a first-time observer could define the beast as a mass of jagged, brushed metal on behemoth wheels. It has the appearance of an unfi...
