Former Bay Area news anchor Frank Somerville was arrested twice in the East Bay overnight for alcohol-related charges, the Berkeley Police Department has confirmed to KRON4. The first arrest came after police were called to respond to a family altercation on Indian Rock Avenue. The home is owned by Somerville's brother, BPD said. Police were told that a man at the residence was being detained after a fight. The man being detained was later identified as Somerville, and police determined he was intoxicated at the time. Police said the family asked Somerville to leave and he refused, and that's when he allegedly threatened a victim at the scene, which then led to the fight. Both parties suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and the victim had a contusion on his right cheek, BPD said. Somerville was arrested on suspicion of criminal threats, public intoxication, assault and a probation violation. He was then taken to the Berkeley Jail, and he was later released. Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:40:33 GMT

The weather’s been a bit gloomy this week, but the mood has been considerably brighter at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo in San Jose, thanks to two new baby red-ruffed lemurs. The pups, who appropriately arrived the Friday of Mother’s Day weekend last month, are the first to be born at the zoo since 2009 — and that is a very big deal. Red-ruffed lemurs are considered critically endangered by the International Union of the Conservation of Nature and are found only in a small part of Madagascar — and San Jose, it seems.Ally, a red-ruffed lemur, carries one of her new pups at Happy Hollow Park and Zoo in San Jose. By Hillel Italie | Associated PressNEW YORK — Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian singer, songwriter and entertainer whose off-hand, English-language cameo on “The Girl from Ipanema” made her a worldwide voice of bossa nova, has died at age 83.Musician Paul Ricci, a family friend, confirmed that she died Monday. He did not provide additional details.Born in Salvador, Bahia and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Gilberto became an overnight, unexpected superstar in 1964, thanks to knowing just enough English to be recruited by the makers of “Getz/Gilberto,” the classic bossa nova album featuring saxophonist Stan Getz and her then-husband, singer-songwriter-guitarist João Gilberto.“The Girl from Ipanema,” the wistful ballad written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, was already a hit in South America. But “Getz/Gilberto” producer Creed Taylor and others thought they could expand the record’s appeal by including both Portuguese and E...

Kurtenbach: The SF Giants vowed to be ‘aggressive’ on the trade market, and there’s one massive need to fill

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:40:33 GMT

Recent series losses aside, the Giants have found some spark as of late, giving the team — and its fans — plenty of reason to think about the possibility of the playoffs. So it was great to hear that Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi tell SiriusXM’s MLB Network Radio this past weekend that the team will be “aggressive” ahead of Aug.1’s trade deadline.Of course, we’ve heard that the Giants will be aggressive before — the organization’s definition of the word often doesn’t jive with the fans’.But if the Giants are, indeed, keen to add from the outside, there’s an obvious need for Zaidi and his staff to fill: Starting pitching. When it comes to pitching, winning in the regular season is all about the bullpen. Winning in the playoffs is all about the starters. The Giants have the bullpen right now. Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg on Tuesday challenged Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to “Bring it on,” as the city’s faith and community leaders put out a call for donations and legal aid to support 36 asylum-seekers who California officials insist were flown to the state capital on private jets chartered by the state of Florida.“Our community will never say no,” Steinberg said at a news conference Tuesday morning. “If you bring people to our community in need, we will respond in a way that will send a message to the rest of the country and the world.”The political showdown over immigration escalated Monday when a second flight arrived in Sacramento, with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta threatening legal action against DeSantis, the Republican presidential candidate, including kidnapping charges if he’s involved. DeSantis has not taken responsibility for the flights but he was instrumental in luring a group of...
