A raft of new gun laws introduced to the Massachusetts Legislature on Monday in response to last year’s Supreme Court decision overturning some of the state’s strictest firearms licensing laws was met with swift condemnation by rights advocates.A year after the high court decided in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen that most extraordinary licensing requirements were at odds with the Second Amendment, Judiciary Committee Co-chair Rep. Michael Day filed H.4420, or An Act modernizing firearms laws to the House, a more than 100-page bill which would ban the carrying of firearms in most public places without express permission and aims to fight the rise of so-called ghost guns.Gun rights advocates were swift to react with alarm.“The proposed legislation is an abhorrent anti-civil rights effort. No community in Massachusetts faces this kind an intentional bigotry and oppression from the State Government! It is simply a post Bruen tantrum, very similar to Govern...

Nets star Mikal Bridges said he’s doing everything to convince restricted free agent Cam Johnson to stay in Brooklyn. But Bridges doesn’t sign the checks. Nor does he have any control over competing offers.Speaking to reporters after autographing close to 200 posters and miscellaneous items as part of a community event with G Fuel just blocks away from Barclays Center, the 83-game man said he sends no shortage of reminders to Johnson, who is set to field multiple offer sheets this offseason. And some are expected to exceed the Nets’ level of comfort this summer.“Every time I talk to him it’s always that,” Bridges said on Saturday at The Vitamin Shoppe in downtown Brooklyn. “When I text him or talk to him, he knows what’s on my mind. He definitely knows I want him here and nowhere else.”The Nets hold first right of refusal with Johnson, meaning they can match any competing offer sheet he signs this offseason. MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico said Monday it has arrested the former head of a federal anti-kidnapping unit in connection with the disappearance of 43 students in 2014. Gualberto Ramírez was head of the anti-kidnapping unit for the attorney general’s office when the students from the Ayotzinapa teachers college in southern Mexico went missing. Assistant Interior Secretary Alejandro Encinas wrote that Ramírez faces charges of disappearance, torture and conspiracy for the botched investigation into the abductions, which are defined as “disappearances” under Mexican law because only remains of three of the victims have been identified. Security forces abducted the students from buses in the city of Iguala on Sept. 26, 2014, and turned them over to a local drug gang, which apparently killed and burned them.Encinas also wrote in his Twitter account that eight soldiers detained in the case last week have been charged by civilian prosecutors with disappearance. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — James Meredith knew he was putting his life in danger in the 1960s by pursuing what he believes was his divine mission: conquering white supremacy in the deeply, and often violently, segregated state of Mississippi.A half-century later, the civil rights leader is still talking about his mission from God. In recent weeks, he made several appearances around his home state, urging people to obey the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule in order to reduce crime. On his 90th birthday on Sunday, Meredith said older generations should lead the way.“Old folks not only can control it — it’s their job to control it,” Meredith told The Associated Press in an interview Sunday after an event honoring him at the Mississippi Capitol. Meredith is a civil rights icon who has long resisted that label because he believes it sets issues such as voting rights and equal access to education apart from other human rights.During the event, Meredith fell while trying to stand and ...
